The harmonized 1066_MexCog dataset represents a significant step forward in the field of dementia research within Latin American populations. This effort, aimed to integrate and standardize data across two major cohort studies to facilitate more comprehensive analyses and insights into the epidemiology and mechanisms of cognitive decline and dementia.
The 1066 cohort data encompass a wide range of variables collected across Latin America, focusing on the prevalence and impact of dementia within Latino populations. The dataset includes detailed assessments of aging and cognitive health in these communities. The MexCog study, a sub-cohort of the ongoing Mexican Health & Aging Study (MHAS), offers an in-depth look at dementia and cognitive deterioration among over 2,000 older adults. The harmonization process involved rigorous quality control, review, and alignment of metadata from both cohorts. Techniques such as sparsity analysis and metadata dictionary creation were employed to ensure data quality and consistency. This process facilitated the alignment of the datasets, merging them into a single, harmonized dataset that enhances the usability of the data for research purposes.
The harmonization also included the development of harmonized and new diagnostic criteria across both cohorts, which could significantly advance the understanding of neurodegenerative diseases and inform better clinical practices and interventions. The final harmonized dataset includes a total of 16,115 participants with a mean age of 73.4 years with an average dementia rate of 15.4%

MexCog data can be accessed through the MexCog study website data repository. A fully harmonized dataset for both MexCog and 1066 is available on the MexCog website or by submitting a data request to the 1066 dementia research group.
