The National Endoscopy Database (NED) is the UK’s largest repository of endoscopy procedure data, bringing together anonymised procedure information automatically uploaded from endoscopy reporting systems across NHS and independent services. Established by the Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (JAG), NED supports quality assurance, service improvement, training and research by providing a national view of endoscopy practice.
For researchers, NED offers access to a large, standardised dataset containing millions of endoscopic procedures, including colonoscopy, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, ERCP, EUS and enteroscopy. The database captures detailed information on patient demographics, procedure findings, interventions, outcomes and quality indicators, enabling robust analyses of clinical practice and performance.
NED data can be used to evaluate clinical outcomes, identify variations in practice, assess the impact of quality improvement initiatives, support service planning, and inform national policy and guideline development. The scale and consistency of the dataset allow researchers to undertake studies that would be difficult to achieve using data from individual centres alone. NED has already supported a number of national research projects and continues to provide a platform for advancing endoscopy quality, safety and patient care across the UK
