Description:
Multiple myeloma is a type of bone marrow cancer, making up about 2% (6,000) of all new cancer cases in the UK each year. A common treatment for myeloma is an autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT), where high doses of chemotherapy are used to destroy as many cancer cells as possible. Then, stem cells (early-stage cells that can develop into different types of blood cells) are put back into the patient"s body to help bone marrow make new, healthy blood cells. At the Royal Marsden Hospital, we perform around 100 transplants for myeloma patients annually. However, this treatment can cause significant side effects and affect the quality of life for several months. Myeloma patients often experience a high number of symptoms and a lower quality of life, which can vary greatly from person to person. Gauging fitness and activity levels helps inform whether a patient is fit enough for treatment and predict how the treatment might affect then. This study aimed to find out if using wearable devices is a practical way to track specific aspects of activity (including total daily steps, distance walked, heart rate, sleep patterns, blood oxygen levels, and skin temperature), before, during, and after ASCT - and to see if these activity levels correlate with other measures of patient well-being.

The dataset represents a defined segment of the multiple myeloma patient pathway: the peri-autologous stem cell transplantation period at a single specialist tertiary cancer centre. Participants were followed from approximately 10 days before transplant until 28 days after stem cell infusion, spanning pre-transplant assessment, transplantation, inpatient or ambulatory care, and early post-transplant recovery. During this period, wearable devices captured measures including daily step count, distance walked, heart rate, sleep, blood oxygen and skin temperature. Patient-reported outcome measures were also collected at baseline and Day +28. The dataset includes patients managed through both ambulatory and inpatient autologous stem cell transplant pathways, enabling comparison across these two care settings. The dataset does not represent the complete multiple myeloma pathway. It does not include longitudinal data from diagnosis, induction treatment, later post-transplant recovery, maintenance therapy, relapse, or subsequent lines of treatment. It is also limited to care delivered within a single specialist haemato-oncology service and is not linked across primary, secondary and community care. Findings should therefore be interpreted as representing the early peri-transplant and recovery phase rather than the full patient journey.
