Description:
This programme measures the quality and outcomes of care for patients who undergo major vascular surgery in NHS hospitals, and so supports vascular units in the UK to improve the quality of the care received by patients.
The NVR aims to improve the care of five main vascular procedures:
Repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and aortic dissection
Carotid endarterectomy and stenting
Lower limb angioplasty/stenting
Lower limb bypass surgery
Coverage
Spatial:
United Kingdom, Wales
Typical Age Range:
18-100
Follow Up:
1 - 10 Years
Pathway:
The National Vascular Registry (NVR) dataset tracks the end-to-end patient
pathway for major vascular interventions in NHS hospitals. It captures
sequential stages of careāfrom initial referral and pre-procedural risk scoring
to surgical execution, post-operative recovery, and 30-day or in-hospital
outcomes. Patient Pathway Stages in the NVR Dataset: - Admission and Referral:
Captures patient demographic data, source of referral, urgency (elective vs.
non-elective/emergency), and specific symptom-to-presentation timelines. -
Pre-Procedural Assessment: Logs diagnostic imaging, clinical indications,
baseline functional status, and standardized risk-scoring metrics prior to
intervention. - Procedure Details: Records specific surgical or radiological
techniques across core disease groups, differentiated by distinct clinical forms
for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), carotid interventions, and lower limb
treatments. - Post-Operative Pathway: Tracks immediate recovery, length of stay,
critical care unit admission, post-procedure complications, and any unplanned
secondary interventions. - Outcomes and Follow-up: Measures critical endpoints
including readmission rates, recurrent events, and in-hospital or 30-day
mortality.

Accessibility
Access
Access Service:
The SAIL Databank is powered by the UK Secure e-Research Platform (UKSeRP).
Following approval through safeguard processes, access to project-specific data
within the secure environment is permitted using two-factor authentication.
Access Request Cost:
Data provision is free from SAIL. Overall project costing depends on the number
of people that require access to the SAIL Gateway, the activities that SAIL
needs to complete (e.g. loading non-standard datasets), data refreshes,
analytical work required, disclosure control process, and special case
technological requirements.
