Simulating Outcomes from Breast Conserving Surgery Using 3D Surface Imaging

Description:
The study explores whether the availablity of personalised imagery, using three dimensional (3D) digital photography to predict the appearance of the breasts after breast conserving therapy (BTC) for cancer, will better prepare women for surgery and lead to greater satisfication with their outcome. Consenting women undergoing BCT were assigned at random to one of three groups: receiving standard care (discussion), a 2D photograph, or the 3D simulation before their operation. Quality of life was assessed using BCT BREAST-Q, including satisfaction with different aspects of their treatment and outcome. A visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to assess confidence in expectations vs reality of how breasts look. 3D photographs of all study patients taken before and after surgery will improve predictive accuracy of this technique for future patients.

Pathway:
Women planning to have breast conserving therapy (BCT) (surgery and radiotherapy, BCT) identified via two pathways: 1) via the Multi-Disciplinary Team Meeting (MDM) or 2) the consulting clinician. Group 1 received standard care only. Group 2 shown photographs of women who have had BCT by a member of the study team . Group 3 shown a real time simulation of how their own breast is likely to look after BCT. Participants had baseline 3-D surface image and follow up images 2weeks, 3M, 6M, 12M and then annually for 5 years post Sx. Participants completed a BCT BREAST-Q to assess quality of life and satisfaction with different aspects of their treatment and outcome, and a Visual Analogue Scale to assess confidence in expectations vs reality of how breasts look. BCT BREAST-Q and VAS completed pre treatment and at 3M and 12M post treatment.
