Managing the experience of prostate biopsy: what are men’s perceptions of their lived experience and support needs?
Men participating, took part in a one-off interview to ask them about their experiences of the prostate biopsy procedure:
- To understand how men are physically and emotionally affected going through a prostate biopsy.
- To understand if there are associated psychological and social concerns, and what helps or prevents men from talking about these concerns with
health professionals.
- To reflect on the experiences of men from a range of social and demographic backgrounds, such as different ages, ethnicity and occupation.
- To hear from both men whose biopsies had a cancerous outcome and those whose biopsies were normal.

Pathway:
Men aged over 18 having a first or second diagnostic prostate biopsy at the
Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust or Epsom General Hospital invited to take
part in one to one interview within 6 months of having the procedure done to
talk about their experience. Most of the interviews were done face to face, but
the last six were done by phone due to covid restrictions on contact at the
time.
