Diabetes - Smoking Cleaned

Flag indicating any evidence of smoking in the raw smoking data.   Populated with 1 where patient has any record, past or present indicating:   Current Status as 'Current smoker' or 'Ex-smoker’  OR Year Patient Stopped Smoking = 'Yes’  OR Cigarettes Smoked Per Day > 0  .

Evidence of Ever Smoking

Date of the first record indicating a positive smoking status.  Blank if the patient does not have evidence of smoking..

First Evidence of Smoking

Date of the most recent record of a patient with no evidence of smoking.  Blank if the patient has at least one evidence of smoking..

Last Record of Never Smoking

Cleaned measurement data consisting of weight in KGs, standardised height in metres, calculated and supplied BMI.  Height is only standardised for those aged >= 16, due to difficulties validating these measurements in adolescence.

Diabetes - Merged Height Weight BMI - Cleaned

When Special data Cleaning Flag = 0:  Standardised median Height based on all valid heights of a patient, that were taken over a specific age threshold, rounded to 2 decimal places.  Height is the median of all non-extreme heights over a specific age limit. Height is treated as static measurement.  Extreme values are determined by checking against both low and high boundaries.  Valid Height excludes extreme values outwith 1 - 2.5m.    When Special data Cleaning Flag = 1:  Height is the mean of non-extreme measurements on the same day if the maximum difference is not more than the threshold (0.035m).  Only includes measurements under the specified age threshold  Height is considered as changing variable.  Extreme values are determined by checking only against the high boundary, allowing values smaller than the low boundary.  Valid Height excludes extreme values above 2.5m.  .

Height

New description:  Only includes records if validation status is ‘Single Weight’ or ‘Averaged’.  Weight is treated as a changing variable. In reality there are limits to the changes depending on the timeframe, but it is difficult to distinguish between real changes to a person’s weight and measurement errors. These have not been filtered.    For multiple weights on the same day, the mean of the distinct valid weights is taken, if the maximum difference is with a 1Kg threshold.  If the maximum difference is greater than the threshold, the measurements have been excluded as indeterminate (these can be seen in the raw dataset where validation status: indeterminate).    Extreme values are determined by checking against both low and high boundaries when Special data Cleaning Flag is 0.  Valid weight excludes extreme values outwith 5 - 300Kg.    When Special data Cleaning Flag is 1, extreme values are determined by checking only against the high boundary, allowing values smaller than the low boundary.  Valid Weight excludes extreme values above 300Kg.    If complete data is required, please refer to the Raw Weight table.  A small number of patients are excluded from the cleaned table, due to not having any ‘valid’ weights.      Original description:  Weight is the corrected weight from the raw table  Only includes records if validation status is ‘Single Weight’ or ‘Averaged’.  Adult weight is treated as a changing variable. Only includes records if validation status is ‘Single’ or ‘Take Average’.  If the validation status is ‘Take Average’, the mean of the BMIs on the same day is used, if single, it is just the BMI.  BMI is treated as a changing variable.  If complete data is required, please refer to the Raw BMI table.  A small number of patients maybe excluded from the cleaned table, due to not having any ‘valid’ BMIs.  This is supplied for comparison, due to the nature of how the data was collected, large variation in height makes this column unreliable, however difficulties in standardising height and weight mean that occasionally this maybe closer to reality when calculated BMI produces an unusual value.  .

Calculated from standardised median Height, Weight with standard BMI calculation.  In most cases this is better quality than the original BMI. We supply the original BMI for transparency..
